We have Bible study on Wednesday afternoons and evenings. We are currently going through the book of Matthew. The night group is a couple chapters ahead of the afternoon group. The passage I want to share this morning is where we are in the 1:00 group.
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Matthew 24:36-44 (NASB)
I think it is interesting that Jesus chose to use the “days of Noah” as an example of what it will be like when He returns. The entire world partied on while Noah and his family prepared for coming judgment. They either didn’t believe Noah or they were so hardened that they just didn’t care. They continued to live it up to the very minute the rain started. By then, it was too late. They were caught unprepared. It wasn’t as if they were totally ignorant. Noah had warned them. He told them what was going to happen and they didn’t respond.
Jesus says that many will be caught unprepared when He comes back. He warns us that we need to stay awake and be ready because we just don’t know when that hour will arrive. It can be assumed that many will be living out their normal everyday routines when Jesus returns. Just as it was in the days of Noah, they will have no excuse. We have been warned. We have been told what will happen. We have been given a way to escape judgment. The choice is ours whether we will ignore it or respond accordingly. We don’t know when that day will come but one thing is certain, we better be prepared.
Grace and peace.
