14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this, you are cursed
more than all animals, domestic and wild.
You will crawl on your belly,
groveling in the dust as long as you live.
15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
Genesis 3:14-15 (NLT)
The first prophecy concerning Jesus is made right here near the beginning of the Bible. God has cursed the serpent for his role in the fall of man. God says that the relationship between man and Satan will be marked by hostility. Satan has been actively trying to destroy us since we first took breath. As much as he hated Adam, he especially hates Jesus, the “Second Adam”, who came to fix everything that the first Adam messed up.
Satan thought he had mortally wounded Jesus at Calvary but as it turns out, the crucifixion was actually the death blow to him, not Christ. It is the one thing that can eventually break the curse and end the hostility.
We don’t often think about the Fall or the crucifixion this time of year but both are key parts to the Christmas story. Jesus came to earth because we sinned and went to the cross to deliver us from the consequences. It’s good to ponder his birth but we don’t need to overlook the reason for it.
Grace and peace.
