1 My child, listen to what I say,
and treasure my commands.
2 Tune your ears to wisdom,
and concentrate on understanding.
3 Cry out for insight,
and ask for understanding.
4 Search for them as you would for silver;
seek them like hidden treasures.
5 Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
and you will gain knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
8 He guards the paths of the just
and protects those who are faithful to him.
Proverbs 2:1-8 (NLT)
Here we see Solomon continue the teaching he began in the first chapter. He initially describes God’s wisdom as a woman calling out in the streets. Here he is more straight forward. The Lord is the source of true wisdom and He will grant it if we will just seek it. Solomon compares God’s wisdom to hidden treasures. If we are willing to search for precious metals which have temporary value, how much more should we be willing to search for the riches God has in store for us?
Not only is God’s wisdom a treasure worth seeking, it is a shield against things that can harm or destroy us. When we walk in God’s wisdom we are protected from many of the pitfalls that others fall into. The Lord watches over us and helps us to recognize danger. We just have to be faithful. We have to have our eyes and ears open and tuned into Him. He helps us to walk and picks us up when we do stumble.
Grace and peace.
